Philosophical Perspective

“Jay has a deep knowledge of historic and current issues communities must manage.  He is a seasoned professional who approaches problems with big yet practical solutions and balances macro thinking with technical expertise.”
— Adria Crutchfield, Executive Director, Baltimore Regional Housing Partnership

Creating thriving, people-centered communities that are resilient to economic cycles, crime and other social ills and disasters is my life calling.

The challenges of poverty, mass incarceration, the lack of economic equity and opportunity and affordable housing along with access to quality health care, that existed when I began my career 30 years ago were not new challenges and they continue to plague us today.

“Jay’s enthusiasm and energy is matched only by his comprehensive approach to community revitalization... he is equally comfortable with policy makers and grassroots leaders. Jay challenged us to think outside traditional parameters.”
— Leanne Stites, Executive Director, Lansing Principal Shopping District

Overcoming obstacles and discovering possibilities drives me.  I love vibrant places and believe that as centers of commerce, vital communities are critical to create opportunity for those that live, work and play within their bounds. At the core of my approach is a belief that we can do better.  To do so, we must challenge conventional wisdom, look comprehensively at community sustainability, connect the dots across sectors while transcending the silos that contain them.

“I believe Jay would be a great member of any team determined to improved their community or the way they do business.”
— Marjorie Green, Director-Community Development, Michigan State Housing Development Authority

A degree in architecture forms the basis of my creative problem solving skills while a business education informs sound management principles to  find solutions.  These merge and are deployed with over 30 years of professional experience to solve large and small scale problems for communities and institutions around the country.

“He has cross-cutting knowledge of construction, public work, environmental and regulatory requirements, and positively exploits the talents of his team members. His greatest strength is being able to spot and address issues early to avoid impacts to project implementation and schedule.”
— Victor J. Gallo, Associate Counsel, ConEd
