Robert Moses State Park

Suffolk County, Long Island, New York

Beaches and their adjacent dunes play a significant role in protecting the landward assets.  Located in Suffolk County, Robert Moses State Park is an 875-acre State-owned facility on the southern coast of Long Island and on the western end of Fire Island.  The Park is part of a series of barrier islands that were engineered to support transportation and other park infrastructure, including an oceanfront beach that has come to host 3.5 million visitors annually.

Superstorm Sandy’s took a 1.2 million cubic yard bite out of the Park as the vast majority of the Park's beaches were severely eroded causing a portion of the traffic circle to collapse into the ocean.

The Project restored the function of the Park’s beaches as natural barriers to make the Park and surrounding communities more resilient to future storms, protected public assets, including a road and water tower from deterioration caused by Sandy, and ensured the Park would continue to provide recreational opportunities to residents of Long Island.
